Purpose
To move evidence submissions received in TEDAC among multiple technical specialty units within the laboratory. To assist in reviewing and evaluating incoming evidence submissions to help determine the nature and extent of examination requests and assist in assigning specific scientific disciplines to conduct necessary analyses. To provide routine support and may receive training in explosives handling, reconstruction, and testing.
Essential Job Functions
- Receives, inventories, maintains chain-of-custody, tracks, prepares boxes for return and prepares detailed paperwork pertaining to evidence and submitted items. May photograph evidence. Assists in reviewing and evaluating incoming evidence submissions to determine the nature and extent of examination requests and to help assign specific scientific disciplines to conduct necessary analyses.
- Ensures each piece of evidence is accounted for, tracked, and transferred among various technical specialties as required to facilitate examinations.
- Receives training in the proper classification and identification of evidence to meet the standards of TEDAC and the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) community. Receives training regarding evidence processing procedures and understanding of the complexities and difficulties that may be encountered during the processing and analysis of the evidence.
- May handle dangerous materials, such as explosives. May operate tools and heavy equipment after receiving appropriate training. Provides routine support and receives training as necessary to assist in research studies, explosives reconstruction, testing, and/or related projects. Respond to inquiries pertaining to examinations.
- Receives training in forensic techniques and evidence handling procedures to become oriented to the laboratory environment and protocols.
Job Qualifications
Associate's degree or equivalent experience (two (2) years' work experience equivalent to one year post-secondary education) and one to two years' experience required. Prefer one year recent experience as a Latent Print Technician. Must have a basic understanding of the principles, theories, concepts and practices of physical science. Must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Functional knowledge of the characteristics and use of scientific equipment, instrumentation, and tools used to gather reliable data required. Must have the ability to gain knowledge of the FBI Laboratory scientific and administrative procedures. Knowledge of safety practices within a laboratory environment required. Must successfully complete and pass the FBI Laboratory/TEDAC training requirements and FBI competency test within the time period as set forth by the FBI Laboratory/TEDAC program. Must possess a Top Secret security clearance.
