Purpose
To serve as a Forensic Examiner to perform all types of latent print examinations; conduct examinations of evidence; and compose a variety of reports. Initiate and perform examinations of a wide-variety of materials using one or more specialized forensic science disciplines.
Essential Job Duties
- Analyze images of latent prints to determine value for identification. Conduct Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) searches using the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), Latent Print Workstation (LPW), or Universal Latent Workstation (ULW), screen results and conduct any necessary comparisons.
- Conduct comparisons of latent prints with known fingerprints, palm prints, complete friction ridge exemplars and other latent prints to determine source.
- Author, review, and provide quality control of case notes and reports detailing findings. Prepare required documentation for case records. Testify to results of examinations in a court of law.
- Stage and maintain proper chain of custody of all forensic material under examination. Use current database network for evidence inventory, tracking and flow.
- Process a wide range of complex forensic materials using advanced physical, chemical, and light sources if necessary. Prepare and maintain chemicals necessary for processing evidence. Use government standard operating procedures for making and testing chemical reagents.
- Provide training, mentorship, and expert guidance in all aspects of the fingerprint science.
- Utilize proper systems to preserve, enhance, and archive digital images.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university/college and more than 10 years recent experience as a Latent Print Examiner is preferred. Proof of FBI competency training can be substituted for the education requirement. Preference given to FBI Laboratory Division competency training as a Latent Print Examiner, in lieu of, possess current International Association for identification (IAI) Latent Print certification. Must successfully complete and pass established training requirements and competency test within the time period as set forth by the supported program. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
