Crime Scene Technician

General Duties
This is a civilian position responsible for the day-to-day operation of the property/evidence function, as well as crime scene processing and necessary transportation of items for analysis to and from an authorized police laboratory or any other location needed. This position receives supervision from the Investigative Services Assistant Bureau Chief.
Availability
Primary Hours worked Monday through Friday, but Subject to call-out 24/7 /365
Shift 1*: 7:00am to 3:00pmM-F
Shift 2*: 9:00am to 5:00pm M-F
*shifts are subject to change
Essential Tasks
- Supervises and controls the processing and maintenance of all evidence and property from the time it is seized until final release or destruction
- Maintain and ensure the security and integrity of the Evidence Property Room
- Conducts forensic processing of evidence, and evaluation of processing techniques.
- Conducts forensic training of personnel as needed
- Conducts research and development of forensic/crime scene processing equipment
- Remains current with techniques to maintain standards with emerging forensic trends and technology.
- Conducts quarterly inventory of all submitted evidence and property to ensure security of facility is maintained
- Purges property and evidence items as required.
- Ensures timely transmittal of cash according to Sheriffs Office Policy
- Provides transport of evidence to an authorized police laboratory for analysis; establishes a rapport with lab personnel; establishes a regularly scheduled time for submission and retrieval of evidence from the lab
- Empties evidence lockers daily, properly logs items, and ensures accountability procedures are followed
- Ensures that property/evidence computer records are maintained accurately and current
- Testify in court as needed
- Performs any other related duty as assigned
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school graduate or G.E.D.
- Associate's degree required; preferably Bachelor's or higher in career related field
- Ability to satisfactorily complete assigned specialized and annual training
(A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of federal, state and local civil and criminal laws
- Knowledge of agency rules, regulations and policies
- Knowledge of court system and the requirements for proper accountability of evidence
- Possession of valid driver's license
- Possess effective oral and written communication skills
- Considerable initiative and ability to identify problems and solutions to those problems
- Ability to work autonomously, needing little direct daily supervision while accomplishing assigned tasks
- Ability to learn and use a personal computer and the current data base for accountability of all required records
