[filmscanners] RE: SS4000 & SCSI under Vista

In addition to Vuescan as suggested by Tony, if the scanner uses a TWAIN
driver, it still should work under Vista 32; but it will not work under
Vista 64 (but I do not know if Vuescan will work under Vista 64 either- but
I doubt it). In Vista (especially the 64 bit version) Microsoft has
abandoned Twain driver support in favor of its own WMA driver specifications
which will be employed by many digital camera and scanner vendors in their
new models.

This means that while the 32 bit version of Vista will run TWAIN drivers,
there will be no in box TWAIN drivers accompanying the Vista software. As
for 64 bit versions of Vista, I do not think that there ever has been an
actual existing 64 bit TWAIN driver, although there has been some discussion
in the past about generating a standard spec for it which according to my
information was never actualized and produced such that real driver programs
could be developed.

However, it should be noted that there is a difference between the physical
connection (i.e., the SCSI connection to the SCSI card and the SCSI adapter
card driver, which Vista should recognize) and the scanner's software
connection (i.e., the scanner driver, which typically was a TWAIN driver
embedded in the scanner software - except for the case of Vuescan which used
its own proprietary drivers - which the 32 bit version of Vista should also
recognize).

Hope this helps.
