Oops, I see now (from the subject) that we are indeed talking about the
Coolscan V ED.

Here's a link I found among my bookmarks, which shows the details of
opening up a current model Nikon scanner. I'm not sure whether you can
take to the end of the lead screw with a screwdriver...
