[filmscanners] RE: negative conversion

Let's stick to straight prints. Speaking of which I sometimes miss the fixed
parameters of straight print (and only changes in overall color balance and
brightness).

Certainly.
I'm not offended by current technology at all. I just like using negatives
for certain tasks and worry that I won't be able to print them by scanning
as good as with optical printing. I'm looking for the best solution, that's
why I write here. VueScan has always been very good except for the
highlights problem which I still have.

Once again: I don't like the fact that no program (really?) can faithfully
convert negative to positive, even if they are equipped with profiles for
particular films. But because of this I won't stop using negs; instead I'm
trying to figure out how to best use the tools I have (VueScan, NikonScan).
With help from more experience user, I hope. I don't need lists of variables
like the one above, it doesn't make thing easier.
Theorizing is a frequent trap, when we only need to talk in practical terms:
I have a nice portrait photograph on one of my Reala negs and would like to
make a digital print from it on, let's say, Epson 2200 and Hahnemuehle
PhotoRag. How to sort out colors best?
I'll try to post samples later.
