  I suspect Firewire is similar to SCSI & USB ... i.e., there is "Firewire",
and then there is "firewire".  Just how well they all work depends on how
rigorous they behave with respect to expectations.  You should make sure
your controller's firmware and software drivers are up to date.  And, if
anything like SCSI, trying another cable cannot hurt.

  Are you using a firewire card, on-board firewire, or the controller which
came with the scanner?
