I strongly disagree.  The average desktop machine is woefully inadequate for
serious image-processing: there is too little memory, the disks are too
slow, the screen is too small, there isn't enough disk space, and so on.

Image-processing is one of the few types of computer use left that still
puts a strain on the average desktop computer.
