[filmscanners] RE: Which SCSI Card for SS4000

I like the Adaptec SCSI cards and I suggest that your friend get one that
can service both internal and external devices. The cards that usually come
with scanners or other SCSI devices are usually bare bones cards that only
have either internal or external connecters and are thus limited. My SCSI
card is an Adaptec AHA-1520B which is an older ISA card but it works fine
driving an internal HP CD burner and external ZIP and JAZ drives and, of
course, my SS4000. I'm using it with W98SE and using VueScan as my scanning
software and everything works just fine.

The SCSI cable you choose will have to match up to either the external
connecter on the SCSI card or the output side of the SCSI device on the
chain before the SS4000. But the connector on the SS4000 is the older SCSI
connector which I believe is known as SCSI 1. It looks like the Centronics
(parallel) connector on the back of a printer, the one with the wire "ears"
that snap onto the cable connector to keep it in place but it's somewhat
larger.

Hope this helps. If you have more questions just give me a shout.

Regards,

Tom Maugham

Subject: [filmscanners] Which SCSI Card for SS4000

Someone who is not yet subscribed here is buying a SS4000 scanner and
wanted to know which is the best SCSI card to use with the scanner on a
PC, with, I assume, PCI interfacing.

Also, he was wondering which type of SCSI cable he needs (he wanted to
pre-purchase the cable, as it isn't coming with the purchase).

What SCSI II cable plug does the scanner use, and what is required on
the Card end?

I haven't used an SS4000, only the SS4000+ which uses USB and Firewire,
and I can't recall what the SS4000 "rear" looks like.

Thanks,

Art
