These recurring arguments remind me of the physics department seminars I
attended in grad school.  Some visiting scientist would make his
presentation, and then in the Q&A period, our local faculty hotshots would
get into endless meandering debates about minutiae.  Most of the time, it
was started by the same characters, and it was usually driven by ego and
one-up-manship, not science.

One of my buds had a great term for this affliction: "technosterone
poisoning."
