[filmscanners] RE: Slightly, somewhat OT

Yes, of course. Hidden files are important part of the system, so must be
backed up as well.

I don't believe any NT-based operating system backs up the entire physical
disk space. Only used portions of the disk space are backed up. However,
it is not unusual for a backup program to back up hidden system files as
well as user-visible files. This is a good thing, not a bad thing, and it
doesn't significantly increase the size of the backup.

Oh, this really matters for me !
Since my system is still quite new (several weeks old), my system partition
(the one I backed up using GHOST) has only about 15-18 % utilization out of
20 GB total space, so I basically need to backup only this volume. Even
doing that I got 4 CDs burnt with the image of this partition, I can imagine
how much would eat backing up whole thing... (moreover, not sure whether the
OS backup compresses the data like GHOST does or just writes it as it is...)

Alex Z

I don't run XP, but I think someone told me that the backup program
provided does a "complete" backup including the unused area of the hard
drive, which would mean a much larger backup for anyone who has blank
space on their hard drives...

Perhaps someone can confirm if this is accurate...
