Ok, that eliminates those things as potential sources.

Ok, that eliminates the cable length as a possible source; are the
connections fully and securely attatched and not loose? You might give them
a quick check before eliminating that as a potential source. Loose
connections can often be a source for unreliable intermittent operations.
Is the card internally terminated at the beginning of the chain via jumpers?
If it is and the end is externally terminated, this leaves the possibility
that the external terminator is faulty or the wrong kind or the cable is bad
with some shorts or breaks in the internal wires. Try a new or different
cable first and then a differetn type of terminator (switch from passive to
active or active to passive terminators). If that is not the cause, then we
need to move to another question. What SCSI adapter card are you using -
Adaptec? Make sure you have the most current ASPI layer for that adapter
and your operating system installed. It can be downloaded from the SCSI
adapter card manufacturer's web site.

As I interpret this, it indicates a problem in the SCSI chain between the
scanner and the adapter - not with the devices themselves. The only time I
ever encountered something similar was with a film recorder which was last
in the chain. It caused the devices on the chain to become unreliable as to
getting installed and staying installed (sometimes all the devices at the
same time and other times individual devices). In my case, it was because I
had put an external terminator on the film recorder which was already
terminated via an internal device terminator setting being switched on. The
double termination on the external end of the chain cause the devices to
become unstable.

If it is none of these factors, I am afraid I have run out of suggestions
and hope some one more knowledgable responds to your questions. Good Luck.

Laurie:

I have both this scanner and the other device on the chain fully
booted up before I start the computer. I have tried three different
SCSI ID numbers so far and two different slots for the host card.

To my knowledge, these things are all correct. There is total of six
feet of cable in the chain and the terminator is correct. Both
devices on the chain function perfectly. However, as I said, I can't
get the Linotype scanner to stay installed.
