<< This is completely repeatable so it looks like the driver only uses 8 bit
data to make
 adjustments even when the final output is 16 bit!  I'm not sure how
widespread this is in
 scanner drivers but I don't think the Minolta software is an isolated case.

No, I know it isn't isolated as the Canon FS 4000 Filmget software appears to
do the same thing.  Check out Norman Koren's web site.
