Lots of things use electric motors of various sizes, though.  Heck, even a
disk drive contains an electric motor in _very_ close proximity to the media
(as well as a voice coil to actuate the heads, also generating a magnetic
field).

I read once that a rule of thumb is that anything that doesn't visibly
attract magnetic media isn't likely to erase it if it isn't in contact with
it.  I suppose there are rare exceptions, such as MRI scanners.
