>From what I was told a couple of years ago that is precisely the reason. I
had several friends who worked at a profitable but not profitable enough
division of Agfa that was closed/sold.

Sadly, I suspect that part of the problem Agfa is facing is their
ownership.  The company is now owned (and has been for several years) by
a pharmaceutical multinational (Bayer) and they probably have little
patience for a unprofitable product line, no matter how it improves
customer loyalty or reputation.

However, if Bayer were smart they'd recognize how many headaches are
generated by scanners, and the tons of money they could be making of
their Aspirin products, not to mention ulcer medication, etc., ;-)
