Thank you for correcting me, but can you expand upon this a bit, because
I'm now somewhat confused.

Does the SS4000 CCD have three lines of sensors per color (in effect
nine lines) or does it use one CCD chip with three lines, one for each
color, or am I totally misunderstanding the design?

I assume the scanner uses a "white" light source and that the CCD has R
G and B filters permanently installed over a set of sensors, but please
correct me if I'm visualizing this incorrectly.  (see below)

|--------------------------|< 1 sensor line (with BLUE filter over it)

Or is it something more like this:
