Maybe what I will say is completely with out sense (I don't know how 4000ED
is build) but it is normal thing in photography that the center of the
picture has better resolution (look any test of any lenses).

Maybe this lack of sharpness of the scan is because of lack of sharpness of
the slide in the corners or because of use of some lens in 4000ED and the
same effect like in cameras.
