No, I guess you basically have to jump right into the deep end there.
I recommended Kodak's document Z-131 in another message. It isn't
anything like a beginner's guide but most likely you'll eventually want
to have the information in there. You can find the PDFs at:

http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/Zmanuals/z131.shtml

I got a lot of good beginner's info from Tom Grimm's "The Basic Darkroom
Book." It's just what the bookstore had and it's served me well.

Regarding mixing smaller batches from the one-gallon packages, Kodak does
not recommend doing this so there's no official procedure for it. I know
there's an issue of the airspace left in partially used bottles, especially
for the color developer constituents, and I'm not doing anything about that
yet. But I need to address it.

What I did to make a half-liter batch was simply measure the volume of
each bottle of stuff, then divide by 3800 and multiply by 500 to prorate.
The color developer (PN 192 7698) comes in three parts. I used 35ml of
part A, 3 ml of part B, and 8 ml of part C. Bleach III (PN 142 4654) has
two components, and I used 95ml of part A and 200ml of part B. The fixer
(PN 156 5175) has one component and I used 85ml of it.

I had some E-6 stabilizer left over from an earlier abortive attempt
at slide processing and I've been using that, but the C-41 version is
PN 856 3170. Apparently it's being gradually superceded by C-41 Final
Rinse, PN 867 3170 for concentrate to make 5 liters.

Also, thanks a bunch for the details on your film dryer. I'm definitely
going to consider doing something like that.

Best wishes,

Tim Victor
